The wine growing regions of Hesse are among the best studied in the world in terms of measuring and evaluating geo-factors. The data has been collected since the 1950s and is available from the state department for geology and environment, the Hessisches Landesamt für Umwelt und Geologie (HLUG).

The brochure “Vineyard soils in Hesse” published by the HLUG presents an overview of the available information.

The brochure can be ordered from the HLUG (sales office Rheingaustrasse 186, 65183 Wiesbaden, Tel: 0611-6939111, Fax: 0611-6939555, vertrieb@hlug.de). The brochure can also be downloaded from the Internet [Link]. Additional information such as vineyards soil maps, atlas of wine growing regions and modern applications such as the wine growing region information system and the wine growing region viewer can also be found [here].

The atlas of wine growing regions of Hesse includes soil and climate maps and vine sort recommendations. The digital version of the atlas of wine growing regions can be found [here].

The compendium of maps BFD5W published by the HLUG consists of four thematic maps (vineyard soil map, calcium carbonate contents, soil water capacities as well as influence of ground water and waterlogging).
